This handsome young fellow from our last litter (Rouge & Jules), has blown us away with the potential he's showing so far, and at such a young age. Gromit finished his Canadian Championship at 9 months, and his Canadian Grand Championship 4 show weekends later at 14 months.

Along the way, he picked up a Group 4 at 11 months old, a Group 3 a week after his 1st birthday, and clinched the #1 Mastiff in Canada spot at 13 months old!

Gromit finished 2018 as the #1 Mastiff in Canada, and will spend 2019 in the Obedience & Rally rings, along with a few select conformation shows.

To say we're proud of everything this youngster has done in such a short time frame would be a huge understatement!!!

So much has happened in the last 11 months here! Both Wednesday and Buttercup have finished their Canadian Championships, Wednesday won 2 Best Puppy in Groups, Marlie won 3 Best Veteran in Groups, and Rouge had a litter of 6 gorgeous babies!

Rouge's litter was a line breeding back to her grandfather Am/Int CH Audley Farms Family Jules, and was done to keep the bone and substance that seems to be lacking in a lot of the Mastiffs we see these days. Rouge herself was a little 'finer' than I wanted to perpetuate, so breeding her back to the size and substance she came from was a necessity for my breeding program.

Our keeper from this litter is a lovely, stocky apricot boy we've named Gromit. He's silly, stubborn, sometimes outrageous, and reminds me a lot of his big brother Wally. Gromit will make his debut in the puppy ring in the new year, and I can't wait see what the future has in store for this most beloved munchkin!
Bendegeit Mastiffs - English Mastiff Breeders in Alberta, Canadatag:bendegeit.com,2005:Post/45245802016-12-24T14:05:51-07:002021-03-17T14:25:29-06:00Way to go Wednesday!Well, this post is about 6 weeks late. LOL!! School and life have conspired against me in the whole process of keeping this website current it seems. funny how that happens!

In any case, I took our two pups from the Rouge and Wally litter to the Lethbridge show back in mid-November. This was only their second time in the ring, and probably their 5th or 6th time on leash - much to our handler's chagrin. ;-) And while Buttercup was having none of this "show dog" nonsense, her sister Wednesday was a rockstar and got Best Baby Puppy in Group on Sunday! I'm so proud of this little firecracker, and can't wait to see how she does as she gets more experience under her paws!Bendegeit Mastiffs - English Mastiff Breeders in Alberta, Canadatag:bendegeit.com,2005:Post/42486582016-06-25T11:51:32-06:002021-03-17T14:24:34-06:00Health TestingI'm happy to announce that we now have 3 generations of CHIC certified dogs! Marlie, Wally, and Rouge all received their numbers this past week!

Why is health testing so important, and what is CHIC?

Inherited diseases fall into two broad classes: simple and complex.
1. Simple inherited diseases are the result of mutation of a single gene and represent around 70- 75% of the known inherited diseases in the dog. The mutation may be recessive or dominant. If recessive, then a dog has to inherit the recessive mutation from both parents before it is clinically affected; a dog that has one recessive mutant gene version and one normal gene version is a clinically normal carrier. If a dog inherits a dominant mutant gene from either of its parents it will usually be clinically affected despite having a normal copy of the relevant gene. Often, individual breeds, or related breeds, will have a predisposition to these simple, single gene disorders, although even in predisposed breeds, the prevalence of the disease is usually, but not always, low.

2. Complex inherited diseases are often described as multifactorial because they involve the inheritance of a number of different mutant genes, that is, they are polygenic, and the clinical expression of these mutant genes can be altered by environmental influences. These complex diseases give rise to clinical conditions that worry breeders the most, diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy and heart disease. These complex diseases rarely show breed specificity and are seen across many different breeds as well as being described in both cross breed and mixed breed populations, often at prevalences akin to those seen in pure breed populations.
Some inherited conditions only become apparent at later stages in a dog’s life.
One other important consideration is that not all inherited conditions are congenital, i.e. present at birth. It should also be remembered that not all congenital conditions
are inherited.
Sometimes the clinical consequences of an inherited disease do not become apparent in an affected dog until late in the dog’s life, and these late onset diseases present real challenges to the dog breeder because a dog could be well past its reproductive phase, and have been bred from, before it’s clinically affected state is recognised.

What can breeders do?
Breeders of pure bred dogs have a real opportunity to address these inherited diseases and reduce their prevalence, because it is the breeder that decides which sire is to be mated to which dam to produce a litter of puppies. It is thus possible, where screening schemes are available, for breeders to screen all of their potential breeding stock for signs of these inherited diseases, before they are bred from, and then use the results to formulate breeding programmes to reduce the prevalence of the diseases in future generations. Putting all of the potential breeding stock through these health screening schemes gives breeders a better understanding of the kind of genes a particular dog carries and therefore what it is likely to pass on to its offspring. Armed with this information breeders can avoid mating two dogs that have an increased chance of producing clinically affected puppies.

What is CHIC?

The Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). CHIC, working with participating parent clubs, provides a resource for breeders and owners of purebred dogs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds by establishing a recommended protocol for breed specific health screening and recognizing dogs tested in accordance with that protocol

CHIC also maintains a DNA Bank that collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding genealogic and phenotypic information to facilitate future research and testing aimed at reducing the incidence of inherited disease in dogs.
Bendegeit Mastiffs - English Mastiff Breeders in Alberta, Canadatag:bendegeit.com,2005:Post/39194162015-11-08T13:15:47-07:002021-03-17T11:13:19-06:00Canadian NationalsWhat a great time we had! We spent the afternoon at the park with a bunch of our (grown-up) puppies, saw friends we haven't seen in years, and made some great new acquaintances! We spent the week with one of my good friends and her Mastiffs, and everyone got along wonderfully.
Wally's daughters Clover & Patsy came up from the USA, and had a fantastic weekend, with Patsy coming only a single point away from finishing her Canadian CH! Georgia was young, vibrant, and full of life - she never failed to wake me with a head butt to the side of the bed and a lick to the face, and she could always be counted on to whack her tail against the noisiest object in the house (which I'm sure she took great pleasure in doing)! She is greatly missed and has left a huge hole in our hearts and lives.Bendegeit Mastiffs - English Mastiff Breeders in Alberta, Canada
